The Podere Donzellino is located on the hill crest of Massa Marittima, the main historical centre of the Tuscan upper Maremma area (www.massadimaremma.it), not far from the town, 400 metres above sea level. The property extends for 23 hectares, most of which are woodlands and Mediterranean scrub, with five hectares of olive groves. The typical Tuscan farmhouse building was mentioned in Leopold’s property register in the late 1700s and old printed maps also indicate it. Obviously it was a meeting point for the countryside festivals, the Mayday festival in particular; traditionally, in Tuscany, teams of ‘maggerini’ (poets, singers and story-telling singers) arrive at farmhouses to bring merriment and good wishes, often improvising on the spot. On that occasion, one of the most famous ‘maggerini’ in Massa Marittima, Lio Banchi, recited the poem of the Donzellino:
At the Donzellin, the air is fresh and cool and the passing of nobles is appreciated, they drink the water from the Cristina spring the one that keeps up their appetite. The cellar is where the fine wine is stored but they only keep it for some guests, one flask at Christmas and one at Epiphany and the other when Jeremy marries. Jeremy go and get a flask of wine!
The first verse of the poem recalls how the Donzellino has always been renowned for its fresh air, even on the hottest days in summer, so a destination for taking walks. The Cristina spring is still part of the farmhouse and in the past it was allowed to develop brickwork production (there are still the remains of an old furnace), and to supply one of the three washbasins of Massa Marittima, still visible at the spring. In the early ’90s, the property was bought by Cristina Lupi Pipparelli, with the support of her husband who, after a lifetime as an industrial manager, wanted to live more closely with nature and do something less stressful.
“My family are originally from Imperia, and were olive oil merchants from 1800 under the name Lupi so it was natural to direct the farming activity towards oil production; we planted about 1500 olive trees of Tuscany’s typical varieties (frantoio, leccino, moraiolo and pendolino); from these we obtain a top quality extra virgin olive oil that has already received several official awards. Recently we began a farm holiday business after restructuring the farm outhouses. We love the country and fine cuisine, we personally tend to our fruit trees, our vegetable garden and we raise our hens, chickens and rabbits. We are pleased to share the dishes of traditional cuisine with our guests”
Hospitality is targeted towards guests who are seeking tranquillity, who want to visit the nearby medieval towns, who appreciate local Tuscan cuisine. They are happy to laze by the pool and let the children play, they also love spending a hot summer’s day at the seaside and still be able to relax in the evening where ‘the air is fresh and cool‘.
